Maine Shows of Art Inspired by Maine Farms

Art exhibits in Belfast and Damariscotta of works portraying Maine agriculture mark the finale of a nine-month project coordinated by Maine Farmland Trust in Belfast and Falcon Foundation in Damariscotta. Maine Farmland Trust Gallery will display the work through August 19. A show at the Firehouse Center of the Falcon Foundation, in Damariscotta, will continue through September 7.

For the project, curators David Dewey (Falcon Foundation) and Anna Abaldo (MFT Gallery) invited some 40 artists to visit 20 Maine farms to observe, paint, write, sketch, and photograph.” Abaldo says, “We never intended this project to be quite so substantial, but almost all the artists we invited said yes.”

Many of the participating farms are properties protected with agricultural easements, including Two Coves Farm in Harpswell, The Buckle Farm in Unity, Tide Mill Farm in Edmunds, David’s Folly in Brooksville, Rolling Acres in Jefferson, Dooryard Farm in Camden, and Oyster River Winegrowers in Warren.

Some of the work was done on-site, “en plein air,” and other work was created in the studio. Each artist wrote a statement to summarize their experience, and to comment on the relevance of using art to advocate for farming.

The artists include Lois Dodd, Dennis Pinette, Bjorn Runquist, Linda Packard, Judy Belasco, Nancy Glassman, Rose Marasco, Ed Nadeau, Sharon Yates, Frances Hynes, Amy Pollien, Lou Schellenberg, Paul Rickert and Jill Hoy. Each exhibit also includes one or more paintings by the late Joseph Fiore. For a list of participating farms, artists, and where their work will be shown, visit
